  • Reservoir Keeper
     
Assistant Reservoir Keeper positions patrol and safeguard dam and reservoir areas against trespassers and livestock; issue warnings for violation of lake rules and policies; respond to general inquiries from the public; perform semiskilled maintenance and repair work using small power and hand tools to do carpentry, mechanical work, plumbing, and painting; assist in the development of job-related interpretive programs and in the preparation of exhibits and publications; perform general landscaping and grounds maintenance work such as planting trees and pruning shrubbery; clean, maintain, and assist in the repair of flumes, siphons, sand traps, blow off valves, and vaults along conduits and pipelines; regulate flow of reservoir water; climb outlet towers at heights up to 170 feet; read and record daily readings; lead the work of personnel in the repair and maintenance of lake facilities; keep records and prepare reports; and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Employees in job classifications represented by AFSME Local 127 are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases: 5% effective 7/1/25
  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Assistant Reservoir Keeper positions work early morning or late evening shifts, weekends, and holidays in all types of weather. 
  • Assistant Reservoir Keeper positions may be required to lift items in excess of 50 pounds and climb heights up to 170 feet.
  • Assistant Reservoir Keeper positions may be required to rotate to other job sites.
  • Assistant Reservoir Keeper positions may require a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus Certification and/or a Confined Space Certificate within one year from date of hire.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
 
EXPERIENCE:  Six months of full-time experience working at a public park, forest, lake, natural recreation area, and/or historical area performing ALL of the following duties: General maintenance work; enforcing rules and regulations; and answering inquiries from the public. 
 
      NOTE:

  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
CERTIFICATE: A valid Grade D1 Water Distribution Operator Certificate issued from the California State Water Resource Control Board is required within two years from date of hire.
 
LICENSE:  A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire. 
   
       NOTE:
  • A valid California Boater Card issued by the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) is required at the time of hire. For Information on the California Boater Card, go to https://californiaboatercard.com/about-the-card/.

SCREENING PROCESS

Successful candidates will be placed on a list which will be used to fill position vacancies during the next six months (180 days). For each vacancy, only those candidates with the most appropriate qualifications will be contacted by the hiring department for an interview.

 

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes applicable to this position, which may include the following: confirmation of citizenship or legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review and exam (which may include drug and alcohol testing); reference checks; and fingerprinting. Fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report. Certain positions may require additional screening processes, including a polygraph examination and/or background investigation. All screening processes must be successfully completed before employment begins.
