Lead the development and deployment of advanced AI and machine learning solutions that accelerate GM’s research, engineering, and product development capabilities. This role is intended for a highly accomplished 8th level individual contributor who combines deep hands-on technical expertise with strategic leadership. The successful candidate will build and deploy AI/ML models, shape technical direction across a broad range of AI technologies and serve as a trusted advisor to technical and executive leadership.

General Motors Global Research and Development is seeking a highly strategic and technically exceptional AI/ML subject matter expert to lead advanced work in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Large Language Models (LLMs), and Scientific Machine Learning (SciML).

This role requires a rare combination of deep technical depth and strong executive presence. You will work hands-on to architect, build, deploy, and scale AI/ML models that address complex engineering and research challenges. At the same time, you will help define strategy, communicate opportunities and risks to leadership, and guide the organization on where and how AI can create the greatest value.

The ideal candidate is equally comfortable developing production-grade AI/ML solutions, evaluating emerging technologies, and engaging senior leaders in clear, actionable discussions on strategy, roadmap, and business impact. This is a dual role for someone who can both execute technically at a very high level and influence direction as a thought leader and communicator.

What You Will Do

  • Build, validate, deploy, and scale AI/ML models for high-impact engineering, research, and product development applications.
  • Lead technical work across a broad set of AI domains, including classical machine learning, deep learning, GenAI, Large Language Models, multimodal AI, and physics-based AI.
  • Translate business and engineering problems into practical AI/ML solution strategies and executable technical plans.
  • Serve as a technical authority on model development, deployment architectures, data strategy, evaluation methods, and responsible AI practices.
  • Provide strategic guidance to leadership on AI technology choices, investment areas, roadmap priorities, and capability development.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly and effectively to executive and non-technical audiences.
  • Partner closely with engineering, product, and software teams to transition AI concepts into deployed solutions.
  • Evaluate emerging AI technologies and identify where they can strengthen GM’s technical portfolio and long-term competitive advantage.
  • Mentor technical teams and influence best practices in applied AI/ML development, experimentation, deployment, and governance.
  • Contribute to thought leadership through technical reviews, publications, invention disclosures, and cross-functional collaboration.

More About Who You Are

  • Recognized technical expert in AI/ML with the ability to span research, applied development, and deployment.
  • US Citizenship required
  • Strong strategic thinker who can connect technical opportunities to business value and organizational priorities.
  • Exceptional communicator who can engage effectively with executives, senior technical leaders, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Comfortable operating in a dual-capacity role as both hands-on builder and strategic leader.
  • Skilled at influencing without direct authority and driving alignment across complex technical organizations.
  • Able to assess emerging AI capabilities pragmatically and distinguish hype from scalable business value.
  • Passionate about applying advanced AI to challenging real-world engineering and scientific problems.
  • Effective at framing technical decisions, risks, and recommendations in ways that support executive decision-making.

What You Need

  • PhD or advanced degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, or a related field, with significant relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated success building and deploying AI/ML models in production or high-value applied research environments.
  • Deep expertise across multiple AI domains, including machine learning, deep learning, LLMs, generative AI, and physics-based or scientific machine learning.
  • Strong understanding of modern AI/ML development workflows, including data pipelines, model training, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and lifecycle management.
  • Experience applying AI/ML to complex technical domains such as engineering, simulation, scientific computing, and advanced product development.
  • Proven ability to communicate technical strategy and recommendations effectively to executive leadership.
  • Track record of leading technically significant initiatives through influence, expertise, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to balance long-term strategic thinking with near-term execution and delivery.

What Would Be Even Better

  • Experience applying AI/ML in automotive, mobility, industrial, defense, or other advanced engineering environments.
  • Expertise in physics-based AI, scientific machine learning, digital engineering, or hybrid modeling approaches.
  • Demonstrated success shaping technical roadmaps or AI strategy for large organizations.
  • Background working directly with senior executives to define direction, prioritize investments, and communicate outcomes.
  • Strong record of innovation, including patents, publications, or high-impact internal technical contributions.
  • Experience in mentoring technical teams and early career researchers and engineers.

Common Interview Questions And Answers

1. HOW DO YOU PLAN YOUR DAY?

This is what this question poses: When do you focus and start working seriously? What are the hours you work optimally? Are you a night owl? A morning bird? Remote teams can be made up of people working on different shifts and around the world, so you won't necessarily be stuck in the 9-5 schedule if it's not for you...

2. HOW DO YOU USE THE DIFFERENT COMMUNICATION TOOLS IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS?

When you're working on a remote team, there's no way to chat in the hallway between meetings or catch up on the latest project during an office carpool. Therefore, virtual communication will be absolutely essential to get your work done...

3. WHAT IS "WORKING REMOTE" REALLY FOR YOU?

Many people want to work remotely because of the flexibility it allows. You can work anywhere and at any time of the day...

4. WHAT DO YOU NEED IN YOUR PHYSICAL WORKSPACE TO SUCCEED IN YOUR WORK?

With this question, companies are looking to see what equipment they may need to provide you with and to verify how aware you are of what remote working could mean for you physically and logistically...

5. HOW DO YOU PROCESS INFORMATION?

Several years ago, I was working in a team to plan a big event. My supervisor made us all work as a team before the big day. One of our activities has been to find out how each of us processes information...

6. HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE CALENDAR AND THE PROGRAM? WHICH APPLICATIONS / SYSTEM DO YOU USE?

Or you may receive even more specific questions, such as: What's on your calendar? Do you plan blocks of time to do certain types of work? Do you have an open calendar that everyone can see?...

7. HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE FILES, LINKS, AND TABS ON YOUR COMPUTER?

Just like your schedule, how you track files and other information is very important. After all, everything is digital!...

8. HOW TO PRIORITIZE WORK?

The day I watched Marie Forleo's film separating the important from the urgent, my life changed. Not all remote jobs start fast, but most of them are...

9. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A MEETING AND PREPARE A MEETING? WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING DURING THE MEETING?

Just as communication is essential when working remotely, so is organization. Because you won't have those opportunities in the elevator or a casual conversation in the lunchroom, you should take advantage of the little time you have in a video or phone conference...

10. HOW DO YOU USE TECHNOLOGY ON A DAILY BASIS, IN YOUR WORK AND FOR YOUR PLEASURE?

This is a great question because it shows your comfort level with technology, which is very important for a remote worker because you will be working with technology over time...
